Wedge Grinds

Choosing the appropriate wedge grinds for your wedges can be a confusing and bewildering maze to navigate. We attempt to compare the leading wedges with each other below.

Wedge Grinds

We use the new Edel SMS Wedge Grinds as a benchmark. Why? Edel is the only manufacturer to include all four wedge grinds across their entire range. This feature in addition to 15 shafts and internal weighting means a fitter can go deeper and dial in the fitting better than ever before. Let’s take a look at the C, T, V & D Wedge Grinds and the corresponding wedge grinds across most major OEM’s.

Wedge Grinds – Terms Explained

Angle of Attack

*The Angle of Attack has been defined by Trackman as ‘The vertical direction of the club head’s geometric center movement at maximum compression of the golf ball.’ The angle of attack is measured relative to the horizon. Shots hit off a tee with your driver should have a positive angle of attack (hitting up) whilst shots hit off the ground should have a negative angle of attack (hitting down).

Bounce

Jeff Sheets defines bounce as the angle the trailing edge (of the sole) extends below the front (leading) edge. Tom Wishon wrote in Common Sense Clubfitting that when discussing bounce, sole angle, sole width and sole radius need to be included. For this reason, an arbitrary bounce number stamped on the wedge is of little consequence

Wedge Grinds

Either through wear or through sitting in front of a grinding wheel, the configuration on the sole of wedges is referred to as grind.

Leading Edge

The foremost edge of the wedge.
